Contains the following types of materials: oral histories, photographs. Contains information pertaining to the following military units and organizations: 1st Battalion, 258th Field Artillery, 3rd Brigade, 42nd Infantry Division; 1st Battalion, 101st Cavalry, 3rd Brigade, 42nd Infantry; 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry, 3rd Brigade, 42nd Infantry Division; 642nd Division Aviation Support Battalion; 1st Battalion, 105th Infantry; Camp Smith, New York. General description of the collection: The National Guard Bureau historians collection consists of the transcripts of seventeen oral history interviews that Army National Guard Bureau historian Major Les' A. Melnyk conducted with members of the New York Army National Guard shortly after the World Trade Center attacks of 11 September 2001. The interviews were conducted 17-20 September 2001 with Guardsmen of the 42nd Infantry Division who were among the first to respond after the attacks. Interviewees include commanders, staff officers, and enlisted soldiers including the commander of the first battalion-sized unit to deploy to ground zero, five chaplains, a medic, the NCOIC of the 69th Regimental Armory (which was used both as a base of military operations and as a civilian crisis center), a communications specialist, and others. Topics include command, control, and communication issues; liaison with civilian authorities; logistics; missions assigned to the Guard; soldier morale; public reaction to the Guard; conditions at ground zero; roving "ministries of presence"; medical triage procedures; Critical Incident Stress Management; potential long-term emotional impact of the events on Guardsmen; and others. Also present are thirteen color photographs of interviewees. Included also, but not currently available for use by researchers, are twenty-two audio cassette tapes and one videotape of the interviews.
